Evelyn Wirkiowski ~ My Senior Story
Since the moment I stepped into the doors at Trinity High School in my freshman year, I felt welcomed. The community I felt was unlike any other I have experienced and I have been so lucky to be able to mimic that in the last four years. During freshman year, due to COVID, I felt more isolated than ever, yet I pushed myself to step out of my comfort zone and put myself into the amazing community that Trinity offered. Without the encouragement of my teachers and peers, I doubt I would be where I am today. Even through the struggles I've had, I persevered through it all with the help of Trinity. I can say that I was prepared for the rigorous challenges I have faced. Trinity has pushed me to levels that I didn't think were possible. The Class of 2024, although small, shines in the spotlight that the Trinity community creates for its students. I am honored to be able to be a part of the family that my classmates and dear friends have made. I hope to be leaving Trinity as a lively and welcoming environment where girls can express themselves, just as I was able to.
My favorite Trinity Tradition has to be the Just Because Games. My first ever Just-Because Games was an incredible experience like no other. Even though the quarantining and social distancing of that year, the spirit of the games did not go unnoticed. I decided I wanted to bring in orange masks for all of my classmates to wear as they competed against the other grade levels, a show of freshman solidarity. In the end, it was a huge hit and it was a moment that brought my grade together, even from six feet away. I did the same sophomore, junior, and senior years and brought a cake for my grade to sing “happy just-because games”. I also helped plan the Just Because Games lineup for my grade and made sure everyone felt the spirit of the week. As the dubbed "Leader of Spirit Week", I made sure that nowhere else did students feel spirit like at Trinity High School. It is an empowering week that connects the grades and allows for self-expression to take the stage.
My message to Future Blazers is to never be afraid to put yourself out there. It is okay to be nervous and scared for what is to come but do not let that stop you from pursuing what you want. Say hi to the people in the halls, try out for that sport you've never done before, and join clubs and organizations. Putting yourself out there is the easiest way to make friends and great memories that you will remember for the rest of your life.
I am a third-generation Bobcat on my dad's side. When my parents moved to Chicago from Cleveland, Ohio they left behind both of their families. Since then, we have visited Ohio multiple times every year. I have always felt a connection to Ohio University but was unsure it was the place for me as it had been for my dad, uncles and aunts, and my grandmother. When I finally visited as a prospective student, I knew that it was a place I felt welcomed and comfortable in just like Trinity. Once I made up my mind, I knew I made the right choice for me. I am so lucky to be able to go to a school with a familiar environment where I know family and friends are just a call and a quick drive away. Although I am going to miss my friends and my home dearly, I know that Ohio University is the place for me.
