Internet / Network Policies Acceptable Use Policy
It is the responsibility of Trinity High School to provide students access to the educational tools they need now and will need in college and beyond. Responsible use of computer networks and the Internet are a part of those tools. With this as our goal, students have access to the Internet and to Trinity’s computer network. Through the Internet, students gain access to databases, libraries and computer services from all over the world.
Use of the Internet provides great educational benefits to students through its access to a wealth of information. However, some material accessible via the Internet may contain items that are illegal, defamatory or potentially offensive to some people. The network is provided for students to conduct research and communicate with others for educational purposes only. Access to network services is provided to students who agree to act in a considerate and responsible manner. Use of this communication system is a privilege, not a right. Use entails responsibility. Therefore, we require that students and parents read and accept the following terms of agreement before access will be granted. Unacceptable use of the school network or Internet will result in the revocation of a student’s access rights. Severe misuse of these systems will result in additional disciplinary action.
Terms of Agreement:
1. I will not post personal contact information about myself or any other person to anyone at anytime. This includes addresses and telephone numbers either at home, work or school.
2. I agree not to meet anyone that I have “met” on-line. I will not agree to telephone contact with anyone I have met on-line.
3. If at any time I receive messages on-line which attempt to set up a meeting or messages which are inappropriate in nature, I will notify a teacher or supervisor immediately.
4. I will not attempt to gain access into systems where access is restricted, either within the school network or on the Internet. I will not use another person’s account or access another person’s files.
5. I will not use the system to engage in any illegal activity. This includes but is not limited to: arranging for drug sales or purchases, purchase of alcohol, illegal gang activities, threats to a person or any other activity which is considered to be illegal in the State of Illinois.
6. I will not use inappropriate language in public or private messages or material posted on Web pages. This includes obscene, profane, lewd, vulgar, rude, inflammatory, threatening or disrespectful language. I realize the system administrators can and do monitor activity on the network, including website access and e-mail.
7. I will not engage in personal attacks or harassment of others including prejudicial or discriminatory attacks.
8. I will not use the Internet to access profane or obscene material (pornography) or material that advocates violence or discrimination toward other people or groups (hate literature). If I accidentally access inappropriate information, I will inform my teacher or the supervisor on duty at the time to insure that I am not later accused of intentionally accessing that material.
9. I will not repost a message that was sent to me privately without the permission of the message writer.
10. I realize that files stored by me on the school network are not private. The network administrator reserves the right to view any files stored on the network to perform maintenance and keep disk use to a minimum. I also realize that the system administrator can see my activity on the web and any activity in my gaggle.net e-mail account. I make no assumption of privacy while on the school’s network.
11. I agree not to degrade or disrupt equipment, software or system performance, destroy data or spread computer viruses. I further agree not to attempt to install any additional software on any computer on the network, add any online services or alter the computer’s hard drive in any way. I also agree not to alter the visual appearance of the computer in any way. This includes screen savers and pictures.
12. I will immediately report any virus warnings I receive to the supervisor. Failure to adhere to this regulation could cause damage to the network or computers attached to the network and will result in disciplinary action.
13. I understand that I am responsible for my personal account. I will not share my password with anyone at any time or for any reason. If my logon and password are used by another person, I realize that my lab privileges and network account will be suspended.
14. I will use the system for educational purposes only. I understand that the following are not educational in nature: shopping; e-mail; music and lyric websites; TV, movie or celebrity sites; chatting; games. I understand that this list is not limited to the mentioned activities and may be updated at any time. I understand that accessing sites that are inappropriate or blocked will cause me to lose my lab privileges.
15. I will not plagiarize works found on the Internet. I will take care to respect the rights of copyright owners and will use proper citations when quoting the above in research papers and other works.
16. I will not download or use services that require additional charges without the express permission of the teacher or network administrator. I will assume responsibility for any fees so incurred by me.
