Women
Who Make A Difference Day
As reported in the Spring 1998 issue of the LINK.
On
Tuesday, March 24,1998 the young women of Trinity filed into
the auditorium to hear the keynote speaker, Sister Rosemary
Connelly, Executive Director of Misericordia Home in Chicago.
She showed a ten minute video of Misericordia North and South
and the students were profoundly moved. Our students perform
more than 12,000 hours of community service in the area but
this was the first encounter many of our students had with
Misericordia, since it is quite a distance away. The next
day over thirty students volunteered to work the Fannie May
Candy Days that collect money throughout the city and suburbs
for Misericordia. S. Rosemary recognized all the students
and their accomplishments, both in the area of academics and
service, and encouraged them to always remember to give back
to those in need.
Among
the thirty women who gave presentations to the students, faculty
and staff were three Trinity alumnae: Mary Ellen Thallemar
Kenny '62, Home Health Care Nursing; Kathleen Prunty '71,
Professor at Dominican University, Communication Studies;
Rita McLennon '66, Executive Director of the National Clearinghouse
for Legal Services. Trinity High School Board Member, S. Mary
Louis Russley, OP, also spoke as a Cook County Assistant Public
Defender. Each presenter gave two 50 minute presentations
with each student choosing two sessions. This format offered
the girls an opportunity to learn more about careers in the
social and human service fields first hand. The stimulating
day was co-chaired by faculty members Marilyn McNichols Hosty
'52 and Anne Murray.
The
conference ended with an ecumenical prayer service lead by
Reverend Amy Richter and Dr. Ramona Joseph. It was an inspirational
service that tied into the many religious education courses
offered at Trinity.
