Trinity roundup:
Blazers' Robinson beginning to heat up
Trinity's Jackie Robinson is catching fire.
The junior scored the Blazers' lone goal in a 3-1 defeat to Downers Grove North April 15 at Triton College.
She scored midway through the second half off an assist from Thea Thommen. She also scored in Trinity's 6-1 victory against Proviso West on April 17 at Triton to collect her third goal of the season. Kim Gingell paced the Blazers with two goals, while Francesca Paterno, Thommen and Lillie Henderson all added single goals.
Robinson is named for her grandmother, not the first African-American to make it to the major leagues. Nevertheless, Robinson is honored to have the same name as the first African-American to make it to the major leagues.
"I did a lot of reading about him and learned how hard it was for him to get into baseball," said the 17-year-old junior from Trinity. "He faced a lot of obstacles, but through hard work, he became very successful. That's how I want to live my life."
This is Robinson's second season on the Trinity varsity team. She started the 2009 season on the junior varsity squad and moved up to varsity midway through the season.
Trinity (4-4-2 overall, 2-2-2 GCAC) snapped a two-game losing streak with the win over Proviso West. Before the DGN match, the Blazers suffered a 1-0 defeat to Mother McAuley on April 13 at Triton, despite outshooting McAuley 12-5 and the defense forcing eight off side violations.
"I had a rough start (to the season), but lately, I've been putting it together," Robinson said. "I had a lot of things on my mind."
According to head coach Dave Preston, Robinson's role this season is to score. While she's gotten off to a slow start, he sees her improving in every game and it's only a matter of time before Robinson starts scoring in bunches.
"It's been what we've been asking Jackie to do," Preston said. "She can score because she has exceptional speed. She took that pass from Thommen and dropped behind the goalie and tapped it in.
"Jackie had to overcome some personal issues with the death of her stepfather," Preston said. "She's done that, plus she's got her school work in order, so now she's ready to concentrate on soccer."
Because of her name, Robinson's often asked if she plays softball. While Robinson says she likes baseball and roots for the White Sox, her first love is soccer, which she began playing while attending Immaculate Conception Grade School.
Although the legendary Jackie Robinson played baseball, young Jackie said she has applied the same lessons learned from the Brooklyn Dodger great.
"I learned that hard work will get you places," she said. "My stepdad insisted that I work hard and always play hard. He died in 2009, but I've dedicated this season to his memory. He was a good soccer player."
Trinity had nine shots on goal against Downers Grove North. Beside Robinson's goal, the Blazers had several opportunities to score, but couldn't capitalize.
"It was a physical game and we definitely stepped up our intensity after the loss to McAuley," Preston said. "If we continue with this intensity, we will likely put together a nice winning streak over the next couple of weeks."
Trinity is at Oak Park-River Forest at 6 p.m. Thursday, and then will play host to Marist at 4:30 p.m. April 27 at Triton.
March 15th
The JV Trinity Soccer Team lost 2 - 0 against St. Ignatius our toughest opponent of the season. Anna Terenzio had 3 goal shots and Angelene Petrarca had 3 goal assists. The defense helped to block more than 4 goal shots. The defense consisted of Jani Mikel, Alexis Panuncialman, Bridget Fahey, Bitta Pacer, and Carolyn Paneral. The next JV game is at the Priory on Monday March 22 at 4:30 p.m. Come out to cheer them on! Great job Blazers! |
