Eligibility Policy for Athletic and Cocurricular Programs
The purposes of this policy are as follows:
To establish qualifications for participating in athletic and co-curricular activities
To provide motivation to keep academic performance high
To aid students in balancing the various aspects of their lives.
Trinity's basic beliefs regarding eligibility for participation include:
Academic / intellectual development is the primary focus of Trinity High School.
Students represent the school and should reflect Trinity in the best light.
Students are motivated by eligibility standards to maintain academic performance.
Standards should be enforced firmly and consistently.
Students who are heavily involved in and outside of school must learn to budget time and set priorities.
Participation in co-curricular and athletic programs are essential to becoming well-rounded persons, but they are a privilege that accompanies good academic performance.
Academic Eligibility Policy:
A minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 must be maintained in order to participate in interscholastic athletics and Trinity productions as well as to hold office in student government, organizations and clubs. A failing grade for the quarter results in a student's being suspended from participation during the following quarter.
Any student who is failing a course at the time of progress reports or beyond must raise her course average within two weeks of the date of the progress report. If after two weeks the student is not passing the course, she will not participate in any sport until her grade is up to passing according to the Trinity High School grading scale.
Any student who is failing more than one course at the time of progress reports or beyond will not participate in any sport until all grades are up to passing according to the Trinity High School grading scale.
Any student who has failed a course the previous semester, including June, is ineligible to participate in a sport the following season.
Procedures:
1. Grades from the most recent quarter and/or semester will be used to determine eligibility. Preference is given to the quarter grade; however, the semester grade may be used instead.
2. A student who receives a failure notice midway through any quarter is given two (2) weeks to raise her grade. Failure to do so results in suspension from the team, production or office for the remainder of the quarter.
3. A student who receives an F at the quarter or semester is ineligible for the duration of the next quarter and/or sport season.
4. At the time of athletic tryouts, a student who is not eligible, provided there are no F's, may try out and be placed on a two (2) week probation period provided there is a place on the team and that she would not take the place of someone who is currently eligible.
5. It is the responsibility of the moderator or Athletic Director to determine eligibility and to notify the student. The Dean oversees the verification.
6. A student who does not have a 2.0 average at the quarter or semester is placed on probation for two (2) weeks. If her average is not at 2.0 at the end of two (2) weeks, she is ineligible for participation for the duration of the quarter and that sport's season.
7. Summer school grades shall not be figured in determining eligibility.
8. All freshman students new to Trinity are eligible the first quarter they are in attendance.
9. Provided that a freshman student has no F's in the first quarter, the minimum GPA for eligibility is a 1.6 for the first quarter ONLY. She is given two (2) weeks to raise her grades. Failure to do so results in ineligibility. |
