Golden Apple Scholar

Congratulations to senior, Tishara Murphy, who was among the 101 outstanding Illinois high school and college students named as Golden Apple Scholars of Illinois by the Golden Apple Foundation, the largest pre-service teacher-support program in the nation.

In exchange for financial assistance for four years to attend one of 53 public and private universities across the state, enrollment in summer programs that include teaching internships and enhanced teacher preparation, and continual mentoring by Golden Apple Award-winning teachers, Scholars must agree to teach for five years in an Illinois school that serves low-income students or has below-par test scores. There are now 1,026 Golden Apple Scholars teaching or on their way to teaching in challenging schools throughout Illinois.

Tishara always wanted to work with children, and decided on being a teacher after volunteering to work with a student on reading last summer. “I feel like kids bring so much joy.” She said. “They look up to you like your’re the smartest person in the world.” She will be her family’s first teacher. She was most inspired by her Trinity Spanish teach, Tamariz Irlanda. “When I was first starting Spanish, I didn’t like it, I didn’t know any words in Spanish at all.” Ms. Irlanda made herself available during lunch and after school to help. “She didn’t give up on me, so why should I give up on myself” said Tishara.

Tishara is a member of Trinity’s track team, Team Trinity, the dance team, Students Against Destructive Decisions, Youth Ending Hunger and Amnesty International. Tishara will attend Lewis University next fall.
